In January 2023, marking the 10th anniversary of WERKRAUM, studio co-founder and architect Mariam Supatashvili spoke at length with the architecture and interior design platform Home Is..
During the conversation, Mariam reflected on the founding story of WERKRAUM, its 10-year journey, and the studio’s design vision. According to her, every new architectural project begins with the proper orientation of the building and an understanding of its context. The studio’s core principle is adapting to modern technological progress and evolving paradigms, guiding a creative process whose outcome withstands the test of time. Furthermore, WERKRAUM’s approach to client relationships is built on long-term, mutual trust rather than formal compromises.
Among the projects discussed in the interview, notable highlights include a residential complex in Avlabari—whose brick facade echoes the historical surroundings—and a school and kindergarten in Luxembourg (an international collaboration with Witry & Witry Architects), which is currently under construction.
When evaluating the local architectural environment, Mariam notes that clients are becoming increasingly open to complex and unconventional ideas—a positive trend that she attributes to industry professionals maintaining a purposeful and principled stance.
